The movie begins with a prologue set during the Quit India Movement in 1942, where Harnam (Pran), a westernized babu, betrays his neighbor Om, a freedom fighter, to the British police. Om is killed in a shootout, leaving his pregnant wife Ganga (Kamini Kaushal) and his family devastated. Harnam flees to England with his reward money and his infant son Omkar, abandoning his wife Kaushalya (Nirupa Roy), who gives birth to a daughter Gopi. Ganga's house is burned down by the British soldiers, but she is rescued by Guruji (Ashok Kumar), a venerable priest and Om's father. Guruji takes Ganga and her newborn son Bharat under his care and raises them along with Gopi as his grandchildren. The prologue ends with the independence of India in 1947 and the transition from black-and-white to color.

The movie then jumps to several decades later, where Bharat (Manoj Kumar) has grown up as an idealistic and patriotic young man. He is invited by Sharma (Madan Puri), his father's friend who had settled in Britain long ago, to pursue higher studies there. Bharat reluctantly agrees to go, taking with him Guruji's blessing and a copy of the Bhagavad Gita. At the London airport, he meets Sharma's family, who have completely adopted the western lifestyle and have no connection with their Indian roots. Sharma's wife Rita (Shammi) is a chain-smoking woman who calls her husband "Darling". Their son Shankar (Rajendra Nath) is an aging hippie who calls himself "Orphan". Their daughter Preeti (Saira Banu) is a blonde-haired beauty who wears mini-skirts, smokes, drinks, and has no idea of Indian values.

Bharat is shocked to see the contrast between the east and the west, and tries to change their way of thinking. He also meets other Indians living in Britain, some of whom are ashamed of their origin and have changed their names to sound more western, while others long for their homeland but stay there for financial reasons. Bharat also encounters Harnam, who has become a wealthy businessman and has raised his son Omkar (Prem Chopra) as a spoiled brat. Omkar tries to woo Preeti, but she falls in love with Bharat instead. Bharat impresses Preeti with his idealism and values, and convinces her to adopt the traditional Indian lifestyle. He also wins over Shankar by teaching him yoga and meditation. He faces opposition from Rita and Harnam, who try to sabotage his relationship with Preeti and his reputation among the Indians.

The movie reaches its climax when Bharat decides to return to India with Preeti after completing his studies. He invites Sharma's family and other Indians to join him in celebrating India's Republic Day at Trafalgar Square. There, he delivers an impassioned speech about the greatness of India and its culture, and sings the patriotic song "Hai Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sada" with Preeti and others. He also exposes Harnam's betrayal of Om and challenges him to face his conscience. Harnam is overcome with guilt and remorse, and confesses his crime to Guruji, who has arrived in London along with Ganga, Gopi (Bharathi Vishnuvardhan), and Shyamu (Vinod Khanna), Gopi's love interest. Guruji forgives Harnam and blesses Bharat and Preeti's marriage. The movie ends with Bharat and Preeti leaving for India, along with Sharma's family and other Indians who have decided to follow them.
